• Scripts or EAs for risk: Some traders go so far as to use light-weight scripts that auto-calculate position sizes from account equity and stop-loss distance.

If you don’t have these guardrails in place, it’s easy to violate risk rules in the heat of the moment. A single oversized position can ruin the entire evaluation.

Step 4: Master the Alerts and Notifications

Consider this: you don’t have to look at charts 12 hours a day. In fact, doing so typically results in overtrading. Let MT5 do some of the heavy lifting with alerts instead.

• Price alerts: Alert at key levels rather than checking constantly.
• Indicator-based alerts: If your system hinges on RSI or MACD conditions, code alerts for those setups.
• Push notifications: Connect MT5 to your phone so you don’t miss out on chances when you walk away.

This is particularly useful during testing because it keeps you from making trades out of frustration.

Step 5: Use Profiles and Templates

One of the underappreciated features of MT5 is profiles and templates.

Profiles allow you to save full chart setups (several pairs, indicators, layouts) and change between them with a single click.

Templates save chart settings for a single instrument.

Example:

• Profile 1: Only forex majors
• Profile 2: Indices
• Profile 3: News-event setup with lower timeframes

This maintains your workflow nice and smooth. No more fiddling with chart positions mid-session.

Step 6: Monitor Execution Speed

Prop firm accounts usually have tight spreads and speedy servers—don’t expect lightning-fast execution right out the box, though. A few adjustments can make the difference:

• VPS hosting: If the prop firm provides or permits a VPS near their servers, utilize it. Lower latency can be a slippage prevention. 
• Avoid resource-consuming indicators: Some of the custom indicators make MT5 slow. Use efficient ones during testing.
• Watch ping: Take a peek at your connection speed to the broker server (right-click Market Watch > Show > Ping). If high, use VPS or a superior internet setup.
